Tabemono in Tokyo – DisneySea Fine Dining in the Park – Magellan’s

While there are many nice dinner options at Tokyo DisneySea, Magellan’s is probably our favorite amongst them.  We were able to walk-in and get a table, but I would highly recommend making reservations if you booked at one of the Tokyo Disney Hotels or try getting a reservation by stopping by early in the morning.  This was from our had dinner back in early April of 2015.

You can view one of my trips to DisneySea here.

Tabemono in Tokyo – Usuki Fugu Yamadaya – I live to tell about it

One of my most anticipated foods of Japan I wanted to experience was also one I was the most intimated to try.   This was fugu, and not just any fugu, but tora-fugu, which is called the tiger fugu.  There are over 100 species of fugu in Japan and about over 20 of them are fished or farmed for consumption.  Of those consumed, tora-fugu is the most prized to be eaten and the most poisonous of the edible species.    The best time to eat tore-fugu is in the late autumn and winter, as the fish fatten up for the cold.

Fugu has tetrodotoxin in its eyes, skin, liver and ovaries which causes paralysis while leaving the victim conscious.  Because of this, for centuries, Japan outlawed fugu from being served.  Today, only strict professionals going through a decade of training can become licensed.

Tabemono in Tokyo – Kagari Ramen – Amazing Tori Paitan Ramen

Kagari opened in 2013 and has built up a reputation considered to be one of the best in Tokyo.  In fact, when the Michelin group awarded Tsuta a one star award, several Japanese publications were surprised that Kagari was not awarded a star as well.  Instead it has been on Michelin’s Bib Gourmand list which is Michelin’s  list of recommended places to eat at moderated prices for the past several years.  After one visit, we can understand the surprise as it easily became my favorite ramen anywhere. Tabemono in Tokyo – Tsuta Ramen – Michelin 1 Star for $10 – $15

June 29, 2017

Tsuta Japanese Soba Noodle Tokyo is the first ever ramen restaurant to earn a Michelin Star in 2016.  While currently it can no longer boast to be the only Michelin ramen restaurant, as it is joined by Nakiryu which also won the award in 2017, Tsuta continues to keep its Michelin star as well as accolades with numerous local rewards and was even ranked #1 in 2013 in Tokyo Ramen of the Year (TRY) for new shops (arguably a higher honor locally in Japan than Michelin for ramen).

While Tsuta has several flavors of ramen, it won the reward for its shoyu ramen.  Their shoyu is made from a blend of three different soy sauces. They are all raw and unpasteurized, being from Shodoshima, Ibaraki, and the last from Wakayama, which is made from Chef Onishi Yuki’s specifications. Talk about dedication to your craft. Tabemono Vacation June 2017 Itinerary – 3 weeks in Japan and through the Japan Alps Loop

I have not updated my blog in a long while since I have been planning, preparing, and finally going on our fourth trip to Japan in June 2017.  Like last year’s summer vacation in Hokkaido, we wanted somewhere in Japan relatively cooler as it can get hot and humid in the summers of Japan.  This time we decided to focus our trip on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and decided to do a loop, which consists of:

Kanazawa -> Toyama-> Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route -> Matsumoto-> Kamikochi -> Takayama -> Shirakawgo -> Kanazawa

In fact, we did a bigger loop the whole trip as we started in Tokyo, travelled to Karuizawa, then did our loop mentioned above,  and then wrapped up the trip with visits to Kaga Onsen, Nagayo, and back to Tokyo.
