Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Day 5 – Furano and Biei Part 1 – Tomita Melon House, Farm Tomita, and Trick Art Museum

After eating curry for lunch at Yuiga Doxon, we started our sightseeing trip through Furano and Biei.   Furano is known for its picturesque rural landscapes and its flower fields, especially its lavender fields in the summer.  The neighboring town of Biei is also known for its beautiful rural landscape of rolling hills and vast fields.  As these two areas are close to each other, we were able to drive to the various attractions of both areas relatively easy.

Although we planned to visit a couple of farms and fields, more rain was in the forecasts and so we had to limit our visit to just the main attractions.  Additionally, we were still early in the summer season, so the flowers were not too impressive.  The first areas we arrived at on our drive was  Tomitas Melon House and Farm Tomitas which are owned by the same family and right next to each other.  It is located in Nakafurano town. Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Day 5 – Furano Curry at Yuiga Doxon

The next day, we took our time to get out of our condo.   Our goal was to stop by  Yuiga Doxon for lunch as they opened at 11am and then head out from there for our self guided sight-seeing tour of Furano and Biei.   Yuiga Doxon is one of Furano’s most established eateries.   It is located in the main portion of Furano, and is housed in what can only be described as a wooden cabin surrounded by trees.  It looks out-of-place compared to the more modern city-like buildings surrounding them. Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Day 4 – Local Furano Cuisine at Kumagera

Continued from post – here and the start of the journey started here.

After a full day of the zoo as well as being on the road, we all took our time relaxing at our condo.  For dinner, I had plans for us to go to Kumagera, as it focuses on Furano’s local style cuisine.  The name of the restaurant means black woodpecker, which is Furano’s town bird.  While they serve great seafood, they are known for their Sanzoku Nabe hot-pot (a miso broth with venison, chicken, and duck) and focuses on local meat dishes (including bear and deer) as Furano is more inland. Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Day 4- Chalet Fuyuri in Furano

Continued from the previous post here.   The beginning of our summer journey started here.

Leaving Asahikawa, we made our way through the rolling roads and hills of Biei onto Furano where we would check in to the two-story condominium, Chalet Fuyuri.   It served as our base location for the next two days as we visited the many attractions at Furano and Biei.  It has 2 maisonette-style bedrooms, aliving/dining room, a loft, and 2 bathrooms. Additionally, it came complete with a kitchen, furniture, and appliances and included a combo washing machine/dryer.  It was one of the most spacious and comfortable of places we have stayed at in Japan. Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Days 4- Asahikawa Zoo and Ishida Ramen back at Ramen Village

The Giraffe exhibit was one of the first attractions we saw in Asahikawa zoo.  It allowed a strategically placed view of them eating at eye level, while you walk down the exhibit to see the same view of them at ground level through a glass display.

It’s been awhile since I blogged about our summer vacation of 2016 in Hokkaido which we started with our overview of our itinerary.  The last post was about our stay at Asahidake located  here  (which left off with our stay at Ryokan Yukomansou).

Leaving Asahidake, the weather was terrible, as it was raining hard while we drove down the mountain onto our way back to Asahikawa.  I had plans to visit  Asahikawa Zoo, which is famous across Japan because of how it devised their enclosures to allow a focus on the optimal view of the animal’s behavior- not just showcasing the animals themselves.  With the rain hitting the area hard, we almost decided to skip this attraction,  but fortunately, we still decided to brave the weather and visit this amazing zoo. We were pleasantly surprised at the admissions gate as the zoo only charged adults 820 yen and kids under 14 were free, so we ended up only having to pay 1640 yen total for admissions (about $16 US for the six of us).
