Tabemono in Tokyo – Tsuta Ramen – Michelin 1 Star for $10 – $15

June 29, 2017

Tsuta Japanese Soba Noodle Tokyo is the first ever ramen restaurant to earn a Michelin Star in 2016.  While currently it can no longer boast to be the only Michelin ramen restaurant, as it is joined by Nakiryu which also won the award in 2017, Tsuta continues to keep its Michelin star as well as accolades with numerous local rewards and was even ranked #1 in 2013 in Tokyo Ramen of the Year (TRY) for new shops (arguably a higher honor locally in Japan than Michelin for ramen).

While Tsuta has several flavors of ramen, it won the reward for its shoyu ramen.  Their shoyu is made from a blend of three different soy sauces. They are all raw and unpasteurized, being from Shodoshima, Ibaraki, and the last from Wakayama, which is made from Chef Onishi Yuki’s specifications. Talk about dedication to your craft. Tabemono in San Francisco: Marufuku Ramen – Excellent Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen in Japantown

February 21, 2017

After the amazing Japanese ramen imports of Mensho, Hinodeya, and Nojo Ramen in 2016, the bar is raised in the crowded San Francisco ramen scene.  You would question whether San Francisco even needs another ramen shop as Ippudo is coming later in the year to Yerba Buena Ln in Downtown, San Francisco.  This was why I was surprised to find that Marufuku Ramen quietly took over what use to be Sapporo-ya Ramen in Japantown of San Francisco.  Japantown already has its fair share of ramen places, with many being sub-par to mediocre like the former Sapporo-ya Ramen.  Thank goodness for the formerly mentioned Hinodeya, and now I can add Marufuku to the list of excellent ramen destinations in Japantown and overall in San Francisco. Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Days 4- Asahikawa Zoo and Ishida Ramen back at Ramen Village

The Giraffe exhibit was one of the first attractions we saw in Asahikawa zoo.  It allowed a strategically placed view of them eating at eye level, while you walk down the exhibit to see the same view of them at ground level through a glass display.

It’s been awhile since I blogged about our summer vacation of 2016 in Hokkaido which we started with our overview of our itinerary.  The last post was about our stay at Asahidake located  here  (which left off with our stay at Ryokan Yukomansou).

Leaving Asahidake, the weather was terrible, as it was raining hard while we drove down the mountain onto our way back to Asahikawa.  I had plans to visit  Asahikawa Zoo, which is famous across Japan because of how it devised their enclosures to allow a focus on the optimal view of the animal’s behavior- not just showcasing the animals themselves.  With the rain hitting the area hard, we almost decided to skip this attraction,  but fortunately, we still decided to brave the weather and visit this amazing zoo. We were pleasantly surprised at the admissions gate as the zoo only charged adults 820 yen and kids under 14 were free, so we ended up only having to pay 1640 yen total for admissions (about $16 US for the six of us). Tabemono Summer Vacation – Day 3 – Asahikawa, Aoba Ramen at Ramen Village and Japan Driving

Bye-Bye Tokyo Disney!! My youngest loved everything about it and as a parent I appreciated how every part of the park was meticulously clean and how the employees was courteous to the guests.

Checking out of the MiraCosta and leaving Tokyo DisneySea on the limousine bus (charter bus) to Haneda Airport felt like the real journey was about to begin.  We were finally on our way to Hokkaido! When the bus dropped us off at Haneda airport it was still early so we had breakfast at the airport since our flight was scheduled for a couple of hours later for departure.

Breakfast in general is not a popular meal in Japan, so options were pretty limited on what stores were open in the morning.  We decided to stay in the outer area before we check in as there are more food offerings.  We ended up finding Monzaemon Soba Restaurant on the third floor of the Haneda airport.
