Tabemono Summer Vacation- Hokkaido/Tohoku 2016 Day 7 – Breakfast Kaisen Don at Sapporo Central Wholesale Curbside Market

After a gluttony of crab from our dinner, we were ready the next morning for even more seafood.  Hokkaido is like a haven for travelers who love seafood.  Our plan was to have a kaisen don for breakfast at one of the street side market areas.  Kaisen don is a seafood donburi (food over rice), and is basically a chirashi bowl we have here in the states.  There are two fish markets in Sapporo, Nijo market and the Curb Market in the Central Wholesale area.

Nijo market is closer to our hotel, just a few minutes walk from Odori Station.  It is a block of different booths selling mainly local produce and a variety of seafood.  However, we decided to go venture to the Curb Market (about a 30 minute train ride) as it is bigger in size with a wider selection of produce and seafood.  It is like Tsukiji Market in that they have sections reserved for bidding of the local catch of the day to stores and restaurants, and have prices closer to wholesale.  Additionally Anthony Bourdain visited one of the restaurants there which we planned to visit for our breakfast. Tabemono in Tokyo – DisneySea Fine Dining at Oceano in MiraCosta Hotel

This is part of my Tokyo DisneySea trip which you can read about here.

The Oceano is one of three restaurants located inside the DisneySea MiraCosta Hotel.  It serves both a Mediterranean-style buffet and a fine dining set course meal.  We opted for the fine dining course.  When they say fine dining, it really is fine dining as I was impressed by the Oceano set course.

There was two five course menu offerings, one celebrating the 15th year anniversary of the MiraCosta at 10290 yen (~$102US) and another called the Silver Strand Course at 8500 yen (~$85US).  While pricey, the courses, execution, and service were all top-notch.  More importantly, it was delicious.  My wife, older daughter, and I opted for the 15th anniversary course, while the younger three had the kids menu. Tabemono in Tokyo – DisneySea’s Fine Dining in the park – SS Columbia

You can view my writeup of Tokyo DisneySea here.  Tokyo DisneySea has many fine dining options in the park.  The SS Columbia is one of them.

The SS Columbia was fun given its unique atmosphere as it made you feel like you’re stepping into the Titanic.  Located in what is modeled after a huge ocean-liner in the American Waterfront port of DisneySea, the dining provides a unique experience and ambiance.

Tabemono in Tokyo – DisneySea Fine Dining in the Park – Magellan’s

While there are many nice dinner options at Tokyo DisneySea, Magellan’s is probably our favorite amongst them.  We were able to walk-in and get a table, but I would highly recommend making reservations if you booked at one of the Tokyo Disney Hotels or try getting a reservation by stopping by early in the morning.  This was from our had dinner back in early April of 2015.

Tabemono in Tokyo – Usuki Fugu Yamadaya – I live to tell about it

One of my most anticipated foods of Japan I wanted to experience was also one I was the most intimated to try.   This was fugu, and not just any fugu, but tora-fugu, which is called the tiger fugu.  There are over 100 species of fugu in Japan and about over 20 of them are fished or farmed for consumption.  Of those consumed, tora-fugu is the most prized to be eaten and the most poisonous of the edible species.    The best time to eat tore-fugu is in the late autumn and winter, as the fish fatten up for the cold.

Fugu has tetrodotoxin in its eyes, skin, liver and ovaries which causes paralysis while leaving the victim conscious.  Because of this, for centuries, Japan outlawed fugu from being served.  Today, only strict professionals going through a decade of training can become licensed.
